On a cold December morning in 1995, the life of 24-year-old Caucasian female, Gina Cyphers, was brutally cut short in her Salina, Kansas home. The day, December 28th, began like any other for the young mother. She dropped off her 15-month-old son at the "Morning Out for Mom's" daycare program at the First Methodist Church around 9:00 a.m. She was expected to return to pick him up at 11:30 a.m., but she never arrived. The daycare staff, concerned when Gina didn't appear, contacted her live-in boyfriend, Jimmie Anderson.
Anderson went to their residence at 721 West Cloud #54 to check on her. What he found would haunt him for the rest of his days. Inside their home, he discovered Gina's body and immediately called the police. First responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:12 p.m. to what was clearly a homicide. The investigation that followed revealed the horrific details of Gina's last moments. She had been stabbed, strangled, and there were indications that she may have also been sexually assaulted. The viciousness of the crime sent shockwaves through the Salina community.
Despite a thorough investigation by the Salina Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the case grew cold. No arrests have ever been made in connection with Gina Cyphers' murder, and no specific suspects have been publicly named. Her case remains an open and active investigation, a painful unsolved chapter in the city's history.
In the nearly three decades that have passed, law enforcement has continued to seek new leads. A Governor's Reward of $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death. In an effort to jog memories and generate new tips, Gina's story and photograph have been featured on cold case playing cards distributed in Kansas jails and prisons. The 10 of spades bears her image, a stark reminder of a life taken too soon and a family still waiting for justice. The hope is that someone with information will finally come forward and break the silence that has surrounded this case for far too long.
