On June 22, 2000, a violent attempted jailbreak occurred at the Randolph County Jail in Huntsville, Missouri, claiming the life of 36-year-old Deputy Sheriff Jason Lee Acton. The male officer, who had served with the department for just two months, was on duty in the early morning hours alongside Jail Supervisor Leon Egley. The incident began when two individuals approached the facility and rang the night buzzer, gaining entry under the guise of delivering items to an inmate.
Once inside the small lobby, the visitors initiated a premeditated attack intended to free a prisoner being held at the facility.
The assailants were identified as Michael A. Tisius and Tracie Bulington. Upon entering the dispatch area, Tisius drew a pistol and opened fire on the unarmed deputies. Deputy Acton was shot in the forehead and died instantly. Supervisor Egley was also struck by gunfire; despite being critically wounded, he attempted to stop the gunman but was shot several more times and later succumbed to his injuries. After the shooting, Tisius and Bulington frantically searched for keys to the cells to release an inmate named Roy Vance, who had orchestrated the escape plan from within the jail. Unable to find the correct keys to unlock the cell doors, the pair abandoned the plan and fled the premises.
Law enforcement launched an immediate manhunt, and both Tisius and Bulington were apprehended later that day in Kansas after their vehicle broke down. The investigation revealed that Vance, who was serving time in the jail, had befriended Tisius during a previous incarceration and manipulated him into carrying out the break. Bulington, who was Vance's girlfriend, had been recruited to provide transportation and assistance. All three individuals involved in the conspiracy faced significant charges for the double homicide of the law enforcement officers.
The legal proceedings resulted in severe sentences for the conspirators. Roy Vance was convicted for his role in planning the escape and murders, receiving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Tracie Bulington pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. Michael A. Tisius, as the gunman who pulled the trigger, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. After spending over two decades on death row and exhausting his appeals, Tisius was executed by lethal injection on June 6, 2023.
