James Richard Dacy, a 61-year-old male and the respected Chief of Police, responded to what seemed like a routine call on August 8, 2001. The call was concerning a stray dog in the local cemetery, a task the chief himself undertook.
This final act of duty, however, would end in an unforeseen accident.
Having served in law enforcement for 31 years, with six of those years as the chief of the Pierce City Police Department, Dacy was a seasoned officer. He had previously served 20 years with the Joplin Police Department before joining the Pierce City force in 1989. On that fateful morning, he drove his patrol car to the cemetery to handle the stray dog situation. What happened next was a devastating turn of events that no one could have anticipated.
As Chief Dacy attempted to retrieve his shotgun from the trunk of his patrol car, the weapon, which was stored in a protective sleeve, accidentally discharged. The trigger of the shotgun reportedly caught on another item within the trunk as he was pulling it out. The single blast struck him in the chest, and he succumbed to the wound at the scene. His death was a profound loss for the community he had sworn to protect and for a family that had already known the pain of a similar tragedy; his brother, Patrolman John Dacy of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, had been shot and killed in the line of duty decades earlier in 1969.
The investigation into Chief Dacy's death concluded that it was a tragic accident, and as such, there were no arrests made nor any suspects sought. The community was left to mourn a man who had dedicated his life to law enforcement and who died while carrying out his duties. He was survived by his wife and daughter, who were left to grapple with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a husband and father.
