In what appeared to be a tragic culmination of neighborly disputes, Cletis Ray Southwick, a 49-year-old man, was fatally shot in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The incident unfolded late on a Friday night, leaving a community unsettled and seeking answers.
The conflict that had been simmering between Southwick and his neighbor, 53-year-old Timothy Todd Logan, escalated with deadly consequences.
Authorities reported that the two men had a history of disagreements, though the specific catalyst for the shooting remains unclear. It is believed that alcohol may have played a role in the fatal encounter.
According to police reports, Logan used a rifle to shoot Southwick in the abdomen outside a home in the 1300 block of Lake Maurer Road. Despite his grave injury, Southwick managed to flee to a nearby residence to seek help. He was able to provide police with information about Logan's possible whereabouts before being rushed to Liberty Hospital.
As law enforcement established a perimeter and began their search for Logan, they heard a single gunshot. Their search concluded with the discovery of Logan's body; he had died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Meanwhile, Cletis Southwick succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014. The investigation concluded that the event was a murder-suicide, with Logan as the sole perpetrator.
