On a late summer evening in Kansas City, Missouri, the life of Maurice B. Brown, a 48-year-old Black male, was brought to a sudden and violent end. The date was September 6, 2014, inside a residence in the 4900 block of College Avenue. The moments leading up to the tragedy were filled with the sound of loud talking, an argument that would ultimately escalate to fatal violence.
Witnesses later recounted hearing the argument followed by the distinct sound of gunshots piercing the air.
In the immediate aftermath, a 20-year-old man named Steven C. Winters was seen standing over Brown's body, holding a gun. Winters did not leave the scene quietly. He threatened one of the witnesses with the firearm before making his escape from the home. His flight from the scene of the shooting continued as he forced another individual at gunpoint to drive him away from the neighborhood.
The manhunt for Winters was brief. He eventually surrendered to the authorities, and the weapon used in the shooting was later found hidden inside a closet where he had concealed it. Following his arrest, Winters confessed to the crime. He told investigators that his motive for shooting Maurice Brown was rooted in fear of the victim.
