In the early morning hours of April 9, 1982, a sense of unease settled over the Starlite Motel in Council Bluffs, Iowa. At approximately 2:18 a.m., the night's quiet was shattered by reports of a disturbance involving a man brandishing a knife. When police arrived at the motel located at 3320 West Broadway, they discovered 21-year-old Linda Mayfield, an African-American female, lying face down near the north office door.
