Carey Dean Shriver, a 46-year-old male, was at his residence when violence struck the small town. The night was marked by a shooting spree that would ultimately claim multiple lives across several households in the rural area, leaving the tight-knit community devastated by the sudden loss of friends and neighbors.
Carey was found deceased in his home
alongside his wife, Valirea Love Shriver. The couple had been shot to death in their bedroom. Amidst the chaos of the scene, a harrowing discovery was made regarding their teenage son. The boy was found sleeping in a separate bedroom, physically unharmed and initially unaware of the violence that had occurred just rooms away. He was later safely removed from the house by responding authorities who had begun checking residences door-to-door.
The violence extended beyond Carey's immediate household to his parents' home nearby. His father, Darrell Dean Shriver, was also killed in the rampage. His mother, Martha Shriver, sustained gunshot wounds but survived the attack. It was Martha who, despite her injuries, managed to provide critical information to law enforcement. The gunman was identified as Joseph Jesse Aldridge, a 36-year-old resident of the area. Reports indicated that Aldridge had previously sought employment from Darrell Shriver's cabinet business but had been turned down, a refusal that some speculated may have contributed to his targeting of the Shriver family.
Joseph Jesse Aldridge was found dead the following morning in a neighboring county, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his vehicle. Authorities discovered that prior to the rampage, Aldridge's elderly mother had passed away in her home from natural causes, a factor investigators believed may have precipitated his violent breakdown. In total, seven people were murdered that night, including four of Aldridge's own cousins.
