However, Ginn's family and friends were adamant that she, a woman described as happy and working on her master's degree, would not have taken her own life. Their persistence, along with pressure from local media, led to the exhumation of her body several weeks later for a proper examination. The autopsy revealed a much more violent end to her life. Medical examiners found that she had been struck in the head seven times, strangled by hands, had a broken hyoid bone, and other bruises. The cause of death was officially changed to strangulation, and the case became a homicide investigation.

According to a witness who came forward in 2018, Ginn had filed a police report against the optometrist for stalking shortly before her death.
