On the weekend of June 12, 2016, a violent incident unfolded in the unincorporated area of Jackson County, Missouri, involving a 27-year-old male named Michael Jeffrey Noud. Known for his charm and magnetic personality, Michael had grown up in Blue Springs where he was a member of the high school swimming team. Friends and family remembered him as a young man with a soft spot for those in trouble, often displaying kindness to strangers during his time working as a convenience store clerk.
Despite facing personal struggles, he maintained close relationships with his loved ones, including his father, with whom he had shared a meaningful embrace just days before the tragic event.
The situation escalated late on a Saturday night at a residence in the 8400 block of South Russell Road, near Oak Grove. Michael had gone to the home of 44-year-old Robert Lee Haynes, accompanied by others. According to witness accounts provided to investigators, a dispute arose in the driveway involving Michael and a former girlfriend who was present at the scene. Tensions mounted, and witnesses reported that Haynes emerged from the house armed with a gun. While Haynes would later claim to authorities that Michael had turned the weapon on himself after firing shots into the ground, the evidence and witness statements contradicted this narrative.
Deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office arrived to find Michael gravely injured in the gravel driveway, suffering from a gunshot wound. A. 22-caliber revolver and shell casings were discovered nearby. Despite being rushed to Centerpoint Medical Center, Michael succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Sunday, June 12. Medical examiners determined that the nature of the wound to the back of his head made the self-inflicted defense highly unlikely, supporting the accounts of witnesses who stated they saw Haynes fire the fatal shot during the confrontation.
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Robert Lee Haynes with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Michael's death. The authorities dismissed the claim of suicide, relying on the testimony of those at the scene who described an argument over property and a subsequent shooting.
