On the morning of July 30, 2016, a welfare check requested by concerned parties led the Bridgeton Police Department to a residence located in the 3600 block of Harmann Estates Court in Bridgeton, Missouri. Officers arrived at the home around 11:40 a.m. and, after receiving no response, made a forced entry into the dwelling. Inside, they discovered a tragic scene where four individuals were found deceased.
Each victim had sustained fatal injuries that investigators quickly determined to be gunshot wounds, and a firearm was recovered at the scene near one of the bodies.
The deceased were identified as members of the Comer family, who had been long-time residents of the neighborhood. The victims included 71-year-old Carole Comer, a White female, along with her 50-year-old son, John Michael Comer, and her 45-year-old daughter, Rebecca Comer Kelleher. Also found dead was Carole’s husband, 73-year-old Thomas Patrick Comer. Neighbors expressed shock at the discovery, noting that the family had appeared close-knit and that everything had seemed normal just days prior to the incident.
Detectives from the Bridgeton Police Department, in conjunction with the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office, launched an investigation to determine the sequence of events. The inquiry concluded that Thomas Comer was the sole perpetrator of the violence. Evidence indicated that he had shot his wife and their two adult children before turning the weapon on himself. Although some reports later cited issues such as depression and paranoia as potential contributing factors, a definitive motive was never fully established.
Due to the death of the suspect at the scene, there were no arrests, trials, or convictions in connection with the murders. Law enforcement officials closed the case after confirming the nature of the incident as a triple murder-suicide. The remaining family members released a statement asking for privacy as they navigated the sudden and devastating loss, and the investigation was officially concluded with no other suspects sought.
