On January 16, 2017, a fatal confrontation occurred at a residence on Rainbow Drive in Branson, Missouri, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Daxton E. Drake. The violent incident stemmed from an interpersonal dispute involving a romantic rivalry. Drake was inside the home with a female companion when the suspect, identified as Dakota Claypole, entered the room armed with a handgun. The intrusion interrupted the pair, leading to an immediate and hostile exchange between the two men, who were both reportedly involved with the same woman.
Claypole yelled at Drake before firing a warning shot in his direction. When Drake attempted to stand up from the bed, Claypole fired again, striking him multiple times and inflicting fatal wounds. Following the shooting, Claypole fled the scene, stealing Drake's vehicle to make his escape.
Law enforcement officers responded rapidly to the report of the shooting and were able to locate and apprehend Claypole just a few miles away from the crime scene, taking him into custody without further violence.
The ensuing legal proceedings saw Dakota Claypole charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. In August 2018, more than a year after the death of Daxton Drake, Claypole appeared in court and entered a guilty plea to the charges brought against him. A judge sentenced him to serve 21 years in prison for the murder charge and an additional term for the armed criminal action, ordering the sentences to run concurrently.
