A young woman is found dead in a ditch In the autumn of 1997, the life of 28-year-old Caucasian female, Andrea M. Hendrix Steinert, came to a tragic and mysterious end. On a cold October morning, her body was discovered in a ditch along a rural county road, three miles south of Francisco, Indiana. She had been reported missing from the nearby city of Evansville. An autopsy would later reveal that she had been the victim of a homicide.
Investigators determined that Andrea had been strangled, and it was believed that she was
killed at another location before her body was left in the ditch on County Road 350 South. At the time of her death, friends and family said that Andrea, a mother and pharmacy clerk, had been actively working to turn her life around. She had recently started a new job and was in rehab, hopeful for a fresh start.
The investigation into Andrea's murder has spanned decades, yet her case officially remains a cold case. Over the years, potential leads have emerged, though none have led to a conviction. At one point, a prison inmate reportedly confessed to her killing, but charges were never filed. Another theory that has been considered by some is a possible connection to Bruce Mendenhall, a long-haul trucker who was arrested in 2007 and suspected in the murders of several women across multiple states. Mendenhall was known to frequent the Evansville area, and his victims often fit a similar profile to Andrea. Despite these possibilities, no definitive answers have been brought to light, and no arrests have been made in connection with her death. The Indiana State Police continue to list her case as an open investigation, seeking any information that might finally bring justice for Andrea and her family.
