In the quiet town of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, the life of 36-year-old Janice Thomas was violently cut short on the evening of February 8, 2018. Responding to a distressing call about a man armed with a gun at a residence on Franklin Street, local police arrived to a scene of chaos, with gunshots and screams echoing from within the home. Inside, they made a grim discovery: Janice Thomas had been shot four times in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The alleged perpetrator was
Ricky Dewayne Davis Jr., a 31-year-old who had been temporarily staying with Thomas. On that fateful night, Davis, reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine, began to act erratically. Despite Janice's attempts to calm him, the situation escalated dramatically. Davis is said to have brandished a gun, forcing his way into a bedroom where Thomas's 19-year-old daughter, Ladaijha Thomas, and another individual, 25-year-old Oshay Thomas-Allen, had sought refuge. He then opened fire, seriously injuring both of them. Ladaijha was shot in the neck and leg, while Oshay sustained a gunshot wound to the mouth. In a separate bedroom, Janice Thomas was fatally shot as she tried to de-escalate the volatile situation.
Following the tragic events, Ricky Dewayne Davis Jr. was swiftly arrested by the Poplar Bluff Police Department. He was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and armed criminal action. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Davis waived his preliminary hearing and was ordered to stand trial for the violent acts that ended one life and forever altered others.
