The quiet community of Reeds Spring, Missouri, was shaken in April 2018 when a concerned relative reached out to a neighbor, asking him to check on a family residing on Crown Drive near Branson West. The relative had been unable to contact the family for several days, prompting the neighbor, Rich Jarocki, to walk across the street to their home. upon knocking and receiving no answer, Jarocki peered through the glass of the front door and observed a body lying on the floor.
He immediately contacted emergency services, drawing the Stone County Sheriff’s Office to the scene to investigate what would soon be determined a tragic domestic incident.
Deputies entered the residence on the evening of April 9, 2018, and discovered the lifeless bodies of four individuals. Among the victims was 70-year-old female Susan A. Gibson, who had moved to the area from California the previous summer along with her family. The other victims were identified as her 43-year-old potential daughter-in-law, Cynthia Miller, and her 17-year-old grandson, Daniel Gibson, a senior at Reeds Spring High School known for his gentle nature and interest in computers. The scene offered grim evidence of a violent end for the three victims, all of whom had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation led by the Stone County Sheriff’s Office quickly identified the perpetrator as 47-year-old Victor Gibson, who was Susan’s son and Daniel’s father. Authorities determined that Victor had shot his mother, his girlfriend, and his son before turning the weapon on himself. His body was found amongst the victims with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leading officials to classify the case as a murder-suicide. Due to the death of the sole suspect at the scene, no arrests were made, and law enforcement closed the case without a criminal trial. The local school district and community were left to mourn the loss, providing counseling support for students and staff impacted by the sudden violence.
