On April 9, 2018, the quiet community near Reeds Spring, Missouri, was shaken by the discovery of four deceased individuals inside a home on Crown Drive, located just south of Branson West. Among the victims was 17-year-old Daniel L. Gibson, a male senior at Reeds Spring High School. The grim discovery was made by a neighbor who had gone to check on the residents after a relative expressed concern that the family had not returned calls or text messages for several days.
Upon looking through the glass of the front door, the neighbor observed a body lying on the floor and immediately contacted emergency services.
Responding deputies from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office entered the residence and located four bodies, all of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly determined that the tragic event was a murder-suicide. Authorities identified the perpetrator as 47-year-old Victor D. Gibson, Daniel’s father. Evidence at the scene indicated that Victor had shot and killed his son, his own mother, 70-year-old Susan Gibson, and his girlfriend, 43-year-old Cynthia Miller, before turning the weapon on himself. Victor Gibson was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a handgun was recovered near his body.
The Gibson family had relocated to the Missouri Ozarks from California during the previous summer, settling into a subdivision primarily inhabited by retirees. Neighbors described the family as appearing happy but noting they largely kept to themselves. Daniel was known as a special-needs student who was well-liked by peers and staff at his high school, where counselors were later made available to support the grieving student body. Because the sole suspect, Victor Gibson, died at the scene, there were no arrests or criminal charges filed in connection with the case, and the investigation was concluded with the determination that the three victims were murdered by Victor prior to his suicide.
