On the night of May 19, 2018, violence erupted in the Penrose neighborhood of north St. Louis, claiming the lives of two men. Ira Johnson, a 55-year-old male, was fatally shot alongside 61-year-old Sylvester Caston. The double homicide occurred around 10:30 p.m., drawing police to the scene where they discovered both victims had succumbed to their injuries.
In the chaos of the incident, a vehicle belonging to one of the victims was stolen, adding a layer of robbery to the tragic loss of life.
Investigators with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation, piecing together evidence that linked the killings to specific suspects. Authorities identified Corliss F. Mack, Jr. and Qiana Fletcher as the individuals responsible for the deaths of Johnson and Caston. The state charged both defendants with two counts of first-degree murder, along with additional charges related to the events of that night, including first-degree robbery and kidnapping.
Following his arrest, Corliss F. Mack, Jr. faced trial for his role in the slayings. In 2021, a jury found him guilty of lesser included offenses, convicting him of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. The court subsequently sentenced Mack to four concurrent twenty-year prison terms for his crimes. The legal proceedings revealed that the suspects and victims were known to each other, and the violence reportedly stemmed from a dispute that escalated into deadly force.
