In the summer of 2018, the life of 26-year-old Sabrina Colleen Shelton was abruptly cut short in her Warrensburg, Missouri, home. On Sunday, July 1, 2018, she was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Born on August 23, 1991, Sabrina was a former student of Warrensburg High School and had attended the University of Central Missouri. She was a mother who enjoyed creating arts and crafts with her young son, as well as fishing and cooking.

The incident occurred at a residence in the 200 block of S.W. Business 13 Highway near Warrensburg. Authorities arrested 39-year-old Russell S. Shuey in connection with Shelton's death. According to statements Shuey made to investigators, he and Shelton had been smoking marijuana and methamphetamine together before the shooting. He claimed that as the two engaged in a sexual encounter, his 9mm pistol fell from its holster and discharged, striking Shelton in the chest.

Following an investigation, authorities alleged that Shuey handled the loaded firearm in a negligent manner while intoxicated, leading to the fatal shooting. Drug tests reportedly confirmed that Shuey was impaired by both marijuana and methamphetamine at the time of the incident.

Russell S. Shuey was subsequently charged with a series of felonies, including second-degree murder, first-degree involuntary manslaughter, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of an illegal weapon. He was held in the county jail with bail set at $100,000.
