On the night of August 1, 2020, a summer evening celebration in Warrensburg, Missouri, descended into chaos and violence, resulting in the untimely death of 18-year-old female Maliyah Lakey. A large birthday party was underway at a residence in the 400 block of Grover Street when an argument reportedly broke out between attendees. Tensions escalated rapidly, leading to a physical altercation that culminated in gunfire shortly after midnight.
In the ensuing panic, multiple shots were fired, striking three individuals present at the gathering.
As police officers from the Warrensburg Police Department arrived at the scene around 12:10 a.m., they discovered a chaotic environment and began attending to the victims. While a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old female were found with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and subsequently treated at area hospitals, Maliyah Lakey was discovered in a nearby alleyway. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back. Despite the efforts of first responders to administer lifesaving measures, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses later recounted to investigators that they saw someone attempt to carry her down the alley after she was struck.
The investigation led to the identification and arrest of two suspects: Christian J. Harrison, 28, of Knob Noster, and Evan R. Lanigan, 25, of Warrensburg. Authorities alleged that a dispute between the men precipitated the shooting. Witnesses indicated that a firearm was brandished during an argument, sparking a fight that turned deadly. Evidence recovered during the investigation included shell casings, a bloodied curtain, and a broken wine bottle inside the residence. Harrison was reportedly seen leaving the scene in Lakey’s vehicle and later admitted to family members that his girlfriend had been shot.
Legal proceedings followed the arrests, with both men initially facing charges of second-degree murder among other felonies. However, the outcomes for the two suspects diverged significantly as the cases moved through the justice system. In March 2021, Christian Harrison pleaded guilty to amended charges, including two counts of unlawful use of a weapon resulting in death or injury, first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, and armed criminal action. During court proceedings, it was revealed that while Harrison admitted to firing a pistol at a specific individual, the gunfire inadvertently struck others, causing the fatal injury to Lakey. He was sentenced to twenty years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Conversely, the charges against Evan Lanigan were dismissed by the state in early 2021, resulting in his release from custody regarding this case.
