In the warm afternoon of August 2, 2018, 16-year-old Trevon Russell was enjoying a summer day at Mount Pleasant Park in Saint-Louis, Missouri. A place he knew well, just a short distance from his grandparents' house, it was a familiar and cherished spot where he had spent countless hours as a child. That day, as he sat on his favorite red swing, the familiar rhythm of the park was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Trevon was struck by the bullets and rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that day.
Trevon, a young man with autism, was known for his quiet interests. He had a passion for learning about different presidents, often reading books about them and sketching their portraits. After his freshman year at Roosevelt High School, he had transferred to Nottingham Community Access and Job Training School. His father, Jermar Russell, remembers him as a boy on the cusp of manhood, taken from him just weeks before he was set to return to school, to a life of basketball and homework.
The investigation into Trevon's death has been a source of ongoing frustration for his family. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department identified a female person of interest after releasing video footage from a convenience store near the park, but this lead has not resulted in any arrests. To date, no suspects have been publicly named, and the case remains unsolved. Jermar Russell has voiced his anguish over the lack of progress and the broader issue of gun violence that plagues the community, leaving a family to grapple with the senseless loss of a son.
