In the early morning hours of August 13, 2020, the life of 27-year-old Derrick Ayers, a Black male, was tragically cut short in the St. Louis suburb of Florissant, Missouri. The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. inside a residence in the 600 block of Starlet Drive. Responding to a call about a shooting, police officers arrived to find Ayers in the front doorway with a single gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite the efforts of the officers who rendered aid until the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District arrived, Ayers was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a domestic dispute. A witness inside the home reported hearing two men arguing in the living room shortly before the fatal gunshot rang out. The focus of the investigation soon centered on one individual: Derrick Ayers's own brother, William T. Miller. The evidence gathered by the Florissant Police investigators led them to believe that the argument between the two brothers had escalated to a fatal confrontation.
Following the initial investigation, William Miller was arrested in connection with his brother's death. The St. Louis County prosecutor's office subsequently issued warrants for Miller, charging him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was then taken into custody and held at the St. Louis County Jail without bond. While the immediate aftermath of Derrick Ayers's death saw a swift arrest and the filing of serious charges against his brother, the final legal resolution of the case remains publicly undisclosed. Derrick Ayers was also known as a rapper who performed under the stage name Bizzie Gambino.
