In the early hours of March 17, 2022, a sense of dread washed over the small community of Bonne Terre, Missouri. Bonne Terre Police Officer Lane Anthony Burns, a 30-year-old male, was killed in the line of duty, a devastating event that would leave a lasting mark on the town. The incident unfolded at a Motel 6 on Highway K, where Officer Burns and Corporal Garrett Worley were responding to a disturbance call just after midnight.
As the two officers approached the motel room, they were
ambushed by a man who emerged and immediately opened fire. The gunman, later identified as James Emery, unleashed a hail of bullets, striking both officers. Despite his injuries, Officer Burns and Corporal Worley returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. Officer Burns was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to his wounds. Corporal Worley was seriously injured and airlifted to a medical facility in St. Louis for treatment.
Lane Burns had dedicated a decade of his life to law enforcement, with five of those years spent serving the community of Bonne Terre. He was a native of Carthage, Missouri, and a graduate of Carthage High School's class of 2009. His commitment to public service was deeply felt by those who knew him, and his loss reverberated throughout the close-knit law enforcement community and the town he swore to protect. He left behind two young children, a son and a daughter, who were just five and nine years old at the time of his death.
In the wake of the tragic shooting, the Missouri State Highway Patrol took the lead on the investigation. With the sole suspect, James Emery, deceased at the scene, there were no ensuing arrests or trials.
