Has anyone else been struck by how random and senseless these kinds of crimes feel? I was reading up on the Jerry L. Ross case from 2006 in Indiana. The poor guy was just driving his white pickup truck on I-65, probably thinking about his plans for the day, when his world was abruptly taken away from him by a bullet. It breaks my heart to think about how his family must have felt getting that news. The fact that the shooter, Zachariah Blanton, was this young guy who just went off the rails after an argument with his family… it leaves me at a loss for words. I mean, Jerry wasn't involved in any of that family drama. He was just a totally innocent man living his life, yet this randomness threw his entire family's world into chaos. The plea deal that Blanton took, pleading down to voluntary manslaughter and criminal recklessness, resulted in a sentence that doesn’t seem to fit the crime to me. The community and Ross's family deserved justice not just for Jerry but to send a message to say how unacceptable and terrifyingly random this was. It makes you wonder how anyone can wrap their head around such a tragedy. Thoughts go out to all who knew him. Stay safe, everyone, and hug your loved ones tightly.
