In light of Jawuan Kelly's tragic passing, I've been thinking a lot about the wider context of crime in Indianapolis during that time. The city saw a disturbing spike in violence in 2015, and Kelly's murder added to those grim statistics. It feels like there were so many lives lost, each with their own unique story. Kelly, despite his past, was a father, a son, a fiancé—roles that shouldn't have been cut short by senseless violence. How do we, as a community, support those left behind, like his daughter Rayven and mother Antoinette, while also addressing the systemic issues that contribute to such loss? It’s heartbreaking to see families like Kelly’s suffering, and it’s a conversation we all need to keep having until real change is enacted. My thoughts are with his loved ones as they navigate this painful aftermath.
