I’ve been thinking a lot about the people who worked tirelessly to overturn Paula Cooper’s death sentence, especially in light of how her life ended. The power behind such a massive outpouring of support—over 2 million signatures and even an appeal from Pope John Paul II—is incredible and speaks volumes about the global sentiment against the death penalty for juveniles at the time. This case really highlights the broader conversation around juvenile justice and how society grapples with punishment versus rehabilitation. It's so tough that, despite all these efforts and her release in 2013, she still struggled to find peace. Just heartbreaking. My thoughts go out to her family and those who campaigned for her, hoping they find some solace in the fact that they made a massive difference in her life. Would love to hear any insights people have on how this case influenced juvenile justice reform in other areas.
