I recently came across Juwan-Howard Smith's case and was particularly moved by how the community has responded since his tragic passing. It's touching to see the vigils and memorials organized by fellow students and teachers from Southport High School. They all speak volumes about the kind of person Juwan was - a caring big brother, a loyal friend, and a promising young individual.
It's heartbreaking to think about the potential that was taken away. A lot of younger students I've spoken to talk about how Juwan was a mentor figure, always willing to lend a hand or a kind word. It's so important for us as a community to keep his spirit alive and to advocate against the violence that has become too commonplace.
If anyone was nearby on the night of October 8, 2018, and saw something - even something small they might not think is relevant - please consider reaching out to the authorities. Sometimes it's the smallest details that can break a case wide open. My thoughts continue to go out to Juwan's family as they navigate this difficult time. None of them deserve to face this pain without answers or justice.
I was just reflecting on the tragedy of Juwan-Howard Smith's passing, and something that's been on my mind is how truly random life can be. I read about a Hamilton County medic who happened to drive by just moments after Juwan was shot. It’s both eerie and comforting to think that amidst such chaos, a stranger tried their best to save him when it mattered most. It makes me wonder about all the little connections and coincidences in our lives that we never even know about.
I'm sending love to Juwan's family, especially his mom, Kenya. I can't imagine how it feels to have so many questions and such deep loss. If any of us can do something, however small, to help Kenya and the rest of the family find closure, reporting even the tiniest detail might make a difference. Keeping hope alive that justice will be found soon.
