I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of sentencing in the justice system, especially after following Officer Breann Leath's case. The sentence handed down was such a shock. I understand there's a lot of debate around the mental health of suspects, but it doesn't feel like real justice when you see the loss and suffering from such a tragic event. Breann was a young officer, a mother, and a whole person lost in a single, reckless act. The sentencing decision that allowed time served for her death feels like it overlooks the immense value of her life. This doesn’t only affect her family and colleagues but resonates with all of us who see the sacrifices officers make. It makes me question if our system truly holds individuals accountable, even if mental health factors are at play. I can't help but think about Officer Leath's young son growing up without his mom. Her memory and service are honored through the renamed Maternal & Child Health Unit, which is a beautiful tribute. The community’s support for her family shows just how much she meant to everyone. It's just frustrating that it doesn't feel like the legal outcome matched the community's sense of justice. Anyone else found it hard to reconcile this sentence with the crime?
