Keegan was loyal and funny and giving. He loved to be the hero. He retained random facts better than anyone I've ever known. He never met a stranger and could find something to talk about with anyone he came across. I am lucky because I continue to see many of his best qualities and ornery looks every day from our son. Here we are 4 years later still making it. We talk about Keegan often, he is a presence in our home always. We watch for Cardinals and feel him when we see them. We miss him. We're always going to miss him but we've learned that grief is love and we live with her well. Davoncia took something precious from us, we are happy that'll he'll be behind bars for the rest of his life. We still want the other man to face justice. We havent forgotten. I wont forget.
I’m so sorry. Keegan sounds like the kind of person who made every room warmer just by being in it — loyal, funny, generous, and always ready to step in as the hero. The way you describe him remembering the most random facts and never meeting a stranger paints such a vivid picture of who he was.
I love that you still see him in your son — the best qualities and the ornery looks. That’s a living piece of Keegan that the world can’t take away. And the cardinals… I really get that. Those little moments that feel like a tap on the shoulder, like he’s close.
“Grief is love” is so true. The missing doesn’t go away — it just changes shape, and you learn how to carry it. I’m holding you in my thoughts as you keep “making it,” day by day, with him present in your home and your hearts.
And I hear you on justice — what was taken from you was precious, and it matters that you’re still speaking his name and still demanding accountability. You haven’t forgotten, and you shouldn’t have to.
