Hey everyone,
I came across Thomas's case recently, and something caught my attention. I'm curious about the possible weather conditions during the time he disappeared. It's January in Alaska – I can't imagine how challenging that must have been! Does anyone have information on the weather around Hollis YACC camp back then? It seems like snow or extreme cold might have played a significant role in the difficulty of the hike. Were there any severe weather events reported during that time, or might the rugged terrain alone have been the main factor? It's haunting to think about how quickly things could have turned dangerous. Any insights or resources about historical weather records would be appreciated.
Just diving into this case about Thomas, and one thing I noticed was the unusual choice of route he took between Hollis YACC camp and Karta Lake. From what I can tell, there were more established paths he could have taken that were known to be safer. I can't help but wonder if anyone knew why he might have chosen a less-traveled path. Did he have personal reasons, or was it just a spur-of-the-moment decision? If anyone local or familiar with the area in 1980 has insights into the terrain or any possible constraining factors back then, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts. It just seems odd he'd choose an unknown route when safer and more straightforward ones were available.
Does anyone have more info about the trail Thomas might have taken from Hollis YACC to Karta Lake? I’ve read through archives and old hike trails associated with the area, but nothing matches the date he went missing. Did local search parties ever map out possible routes back in 1980, or might there be someone with knowledge of the area around that time? It seems strange that the trail is still so unknown. Also curious if weather conditions at the time might have forced him to take a less known path. Any insights would be appreciated!
