Has anyone heard about the potential eyewitness who supposedly saw Richard after he went overboard? I came across a comment somewhere in an archive from a fisherman who claimed he was in the area that day and insisted he saw someone in the water who appeared to be signaling for help. He was never able to confirm if it was Richard, but it always made me wonder if more eyewitness accounts or details are out there that might have been overlooked originally. It's a long shot, but maybe there's someone else out there who was on another nearby vessel or has heard similar stories? It's worth revisiting these possibilities, even after all this time. Thoughts?
Did anyone else find it odd how little information there is about the safety protocols on the Discovery? I know it was the early 80s and regulations weren't as rigorous as today, but I've been doing some digging and can't find much on how prepared these fishing vessels were for emergencies back then. Were there life rafts or protocols for crew overboard situations? Just seems like there might have been ways to prevent something like Richard's case. If anyone has insights into the maritime safety standards of that era, I'd love to hear more.
