I’ve been thinking a lot about Officer Douglas Edward Wendel's widow and their three young kids. Losing a husband and father in such a violent way must be an unimaginable loss. It’s tragic to think about how a single moment while simply doing his job changed everything for them. Anne S. Wendel, his wife, has to navigate life without her partner and try to explain to their children why their dad isn’t coming home anymore. The community support must be comforting, but it doesn’t replace the everyday presence and love of a husband and father. I really hope that there are strong support networks around them to help carry them through this unimaginable time. Officer Wendel’s legacy will live on in the people whose lives he touched, and it's clear from the outpouring of respect and grief that he made a huge impact in Richmond.
