I've been thinking a lot about the preparations Deputy Justus might have gone through prior to that awful day. It's truly unsettling to consider that a routine response to a call could turn so dangerous in an instant. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, Justus undoubtedly faced various challenging situations throughout his career, both in the military and as a deputy. However, nothing can truly prepare anyone for an ambush scenario like what he endured with his partner that fateful day. I'm struck by the incredible bravery both deputies showed in remaining calm enough to radio for help even while under fire. It really speaks to their training and composure during such an unimaginably terrifying event. My heart goes out to Justus’s family and colleagues—nobody should have to experience such a profound loss, especially in the line of duty. What encourages me is seeing how the community rallied together afterward to honor their service and sacrifice. It's reminders like these that show the ongoing support needed for our law enforcement officers.
