I've been following the Palmer case, and something that's really been on my mind is the lack of effective enforcement for protective orders. It's so disturbing to think about how Kristin did everything she possibly could—filing complaints, seeking protection for herself and Griffin—and yet it wasn't enough to save them. I can't help but wonder what systems need to be put in place to prevent those who have shown violent tendencies from being released on bond so easily. The pain this family endured is unimaginable, and it's made worse by the fact that the warning signs were there, yet the system didn't work fast enough to intervene. My heart goes out to Terry Griffin and all of Griffin’s friends and family. They deserved better protection from a system meant to safeguard them. How do we spark the change needed to ensure this doesn't happen to another family? Their community shouldn't have to bear this grief, and it's past time for lawmakers to listen and act.
