I've been following the case of Nicholas Jerome Ackies for a while now, and every time I think about it, the senselessness of it all just hits me. As a fellow student at a nearby university, I see how these kinds of tragedies create a huge impact—not just for the family and close friends but for every student who shares a similar path. I can't imagine the grief his teammates must be feeling, especially having seen him sidelined because of an injury and then losing him in such a violent way. I read about the moment of silence Norfolk State held at the homecoming game, and it truly speaks volumes about how beloved Nicholas was. It's these moments that remind us how tightly knit the student community can be, rallying together in moments of tragedy. I hope Nicholas' story continues to raise awareness about the importance of tackling gun violence. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but hopefully this can spark some form of positive change, even if it's just creating more dialogues around safety and prevention on college campuses.
