Reading about Mario Garnes' case really puts into perspective how deeply rooted the issues were in Chicago back in 2007. It’s infuriating to see how the socio-economic disparities and limited opportunities for youth played such a major role in seemingly avoidable tragedies. The city was practically a pressure cooker at that time, and so many bright futures, like Mario's, were snuffed out due to circumstances beyond their control. I can't help but think about Mario's family and how such a loss leaves a lasting void. It’s disheartening to see how systemic these problems were and how they persist even today. How can a community heal and move forward when its very foundation is shaking? My thoughts are with all affected by the violence of that time.
