Has anyone else noticed the strange weather patterns around the time the Vestfjord went missing? I've been reading old reports, and it seems there were some pretty gnarly weather systems in that area back in the winter of 1970. I know the mayday mentioned heavy icing, but could things have been even worse than what we were initially led to believe? Sometimes I feel like there are these environmental factors that don't get enough attention in older cases. Just a thought, but maybe digging into old weather data and reports might shed more light on what happened to Richard Legary and the crew. Anyone here with knowledge of maritime weather conditions have insights? Could the conditions have been underestimated at the time of their disappearance?
I've been reading about the disappearance of Richard Legary and the crew of the Vestfjord, and something has always puzzled me about these maritime mysteries. It's astonishing how a large steel vessel could just vanish without a trace. I wonder if there were specific weather conditions in that area off the Trinity Islands on January 1, 1970, that could explain why neither the ship nor any remnants were ever found. Was the mayday call detailed enough to give clues about the weather conditions they were facing, or did it just get lost in translation? Also, I've heard stories about the unpredictability of the Bering Sea and the surrounding waters; could there be unique oceanic currents or underwater topography in that area that would make search and recovery efforts particularly challenging? Just a lot on my mind as I try to wrap my head around what could have happened out there. Would love to hear thoughts or any additional info anyone might have.
