I've been following the case of Naquan O'Shea Madison, and I can't help but keep thinking about the community's role in helping solve this. It must be such a tough position for the residents around Hickory Street—caught in the middle of wanting to protect their own and the fear of potential repercussions from speaking out. The RESET walk organized by the Portsmouth Police was a great start to building trust, but I wonder how many people are actually willing to come forward with what they know. It's understandable why some might hesitate, especially when gun violence seems to be on the rise.
For anyone living in the area or who has been a part of situations like this, what do you think it would take to encourage more community cooperation in these circumstances? Are there any measures that have worked elsewhere that could be adapted here? My heart goes out to Naquan's family and friends—no one should have to go through this kind of loss.
