I’ve been researching the tragic events in Hackettstown on August 26, 1977, and something that keeps sticking with me is the location of the incident. The abandoned tannery near the railroad tracks seems so isolated and eerie now, but I wonder what it was like back then. Was it a place kids dared each other to explore, or just somewhere ignored by most folks? It's chilling to think that such a quiet, forgotten spot became the scene of something so horrific.
In small towns like Hackettstown, places like this can become almost mythologized after events like these. It makes me think about Clifford Sowers and the other victims who had their lives taken in such a senseless way. Just regular people going about their day, caught up in the unimaginable. My heart goes out to their families and friends who had to grapple with such a sudden and devastating loss. Does anyone from the area remember what that part of town was like before the tragedy?
