I’ve been following the case of April Gates, and one thing that really stands out to me is the courage it took for her to report Darnell Collins and secure a restraining order. It's deeply upsetting that her bravery in trying to protect herself had such a devastating outcome. It’s so important to talk about the risks involved when it comes to leaving an abusive relationship. April did everything she was supposed to, but the systems in place failed to protect her. It's a grim reminder of how much improvement is needed to ensure safety for those who seek help. My heart goes out to her family, who not only lost April but also had to endure the horror Collins brought upon them. Holding space for them during this time.
