Lopez was just trying to enjoy a game night with friends, something completely relatable to any of us, and his life was tragically cut short. No one should face such violence, especially in their own space meant for leisure and community. The sentencing, especially with Malone, feels justified given the calculated nature of their actions. But it makes me wonder how many more robberies and violent acts could be happening in secret, going unreported due to fear of retaliation or deportation. The fear members of marginalized communities face in seeking justice is a real issue that needs more attention.
