I’ve been thinking about the role mental health played in Scott Kologi’s trial, and it’s incredibly complex. While the jury rejected the insanity plea, the fact that Scott suffered from schizophrenia and other mental health issues can’t be ignored. It’s a harsh reminder of how critical early intervention and treatment are, particularly for young people facing severe mental health challenges. It’s so heartbreaking to think of the Kologi family and their friends, especially around the holidays, when families should be coming together. I can’t imagine the pain their community in Long Branch feels, both for the victims and for the son who committed these unimaginable acts. Too often, mental health isn't addressed until it’s too late. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy. Let’s hope this raises more awareness about the necessity for mental health support and intervention.
