I’ve been following the case of Daquan Cuttino and keep thinking about his girlfriend, the sole eyewitness to that terrifying night. I can’t imagine the weight of having to relive such a traumatic event over and over, particularly when her testimony played such a crucial role in seeking justice for Daquan. It’s hard enough to cope with losing someone you love so violently, let alone having the responsibility of being the key witness in a murder trial. In cases like these, eyewitness accounts are invaluable but also incredibly taxing on the individual. I wonder what kind of support systems are in place for people like her during and after the trial. She showed incredible courage and strength in the courtroom, and that shouldn’t go unnoticed. If anyone has knowledge about how witnesses are supported in these situations, I’d be interested to hear. It’s a vital part of the justice process that often seems overlooked.
