It’s been puzzling me how Clarence's companion managed to float down the river unharmed while Clarence was never found. I know conditions can change rapidly on a river as large as the Yukon—currents, debris, etc. Could there have been a sudden shift in the current that affected their paths differently? Maybe the location where Clarence aimed to swim toward shore had something unusual underwater that wasn’t apparent from the surface.
Also, I can’t help but wonder what thoughts were going through their minds after the fall. Such a terrifying situation to be in without a life vest. Maybe someone local to Nulato can shed light on whether this stretch of the river is known for tricky navigation or unpredictable waters? Would love to hear from anyone familiar with the area!
