Was anyone else deeply impacted by the community's response to Jerry's passing? It's been heartening to see how much Jerry meant to the people in Newark, even as we've had to wait so long for answers about his death. I live nearby, and I remember the feeling of disbelief and sadness that swept through the neighborhood that day. So many folks came together, sharing memories and supporting each other in ways that really highlight the strength of our community. It felt like everyone knew Jerry or had been touched by him in some way. For those who don't know, he was always willing to lend a hand and had a way of making people feel valued. I hope that with the arrests (finally!), we can all find some closure and continue to honor his memory by working towards making our neighborhood safer. But, I still wonder if there's more we could be doing to keep the dialogue open about these incidents and prevent them from happening again. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened to Jerry Wayne Works, Jr. It hits close to home knowing that a beloved member of the Newark community was taken so suddenly and violently. It feels like it was just yesterday when we heard the shocking news of the shooting on Brenner Street. Jerry was well-liked in the neighborhood, and his loss left a deep void for everyone who knew him.
Now, after more than two years, authorities have finally made some headway with the arrests of Ibn Hill and Tyquan Zigler. While I'm relieved to see progress, I can't help but wonder about the motive behind such a tragic act. What drives people to take a life? The news hasn't made it any easier to come to terms with the reality of gun violence in our city. It really does make you question the safety of our community.
To Jerry’s family and friends, my heart goes out to you. I hope you find some solace in knowing that justice might be served, even if it won't bring Jerry back. I sincerely hope if anyone out there knows more, they find the courage to come forward and help ensure that those responsible are held accountable. My thoughts are with all of you who feel Jerry's absence every day.
