I’ve been following the Valencia Drive case pretty closely, and one thing that really keeps me up at night is the ongoing impact this must have on the families of Christopher and Jonathan. Losing someone you love to such senseless violence is something no family should have to go through, and it's a reminder of how fragile life is.
Reading about the trial and the defense attorney bringing up Mathis' family background made me wonder how this aspect played out during the proceedings. It must have been incredibly difficult for the families to hear about the psychiatric evaluation and Mathis’ past, as they were likely looking to find some closure and justice amidst their grief.
Many people find it reassuring when the justice system works as it should, but I imagine it's bittersweet for the families, knowing nothing can bring their loved ones back. My thoughts go out to them, hoping they find some comfort and peace, even as they carry the heavy burden of loss.
