Hey everyone, I came across something that has me really thinking about the lack of accountability in Lamar "Ditney" Smith's case. What stands out to me is the apparent negligence or maybe even complicity of Sheriff Carnie E. Smith. How does a sheriff, who reportedly knew details about the crime and the suspect, just choose not to make an arrest? It seems like an outrageous abuse of power.
I also read that the district attorney actually acknowledged the sheriff’s inaction. Yet, nothing substantial came of it at the time, which further demonstrates the systemic issues within the justice system. It's beyond frustrating and incredibly upsetting to see that justice wasn’t served because those in power simply chose to ignore it.
It makes me wonder how deep the fear of racial retaliation went, even among those who were supposed to enforce the law. For everyone who lived in that community—or even similar ones—back then, it must have been terrifying. My heart goes out to Smith's family and all who continue to fight for justice that’s long overdue.
I’ve been deeply moved by the story of Lamar "Ditney" Smith, and the more I read about it, the more I can’t shake the sheer bravery he had. It’s so frustrating and sad to think how, at a time when he was making such a significant impact in helping people register to vote and exercise their rights, his life was brutally cut short. I keep thinking about how courageous he had to have been, particularly facing those challenges in the South during the 1950s.
Where's the justice for someone who was doing nothing but standing up for what's right? It baffles me that with so many witnesses, fear still silenced them. It’s chilling that not even the sheriff, who was there, took action. How do you move on knowing that people just stood by like that? I just hope we keep telling these stories. We owe it to Smith and his family to continue the fight for the justice he never received and for the voting rights he championed.
I was revisiting the tragic case of Lamar "Ditney" Smith, and something that's really been on my mind is the courage it must have taken for him to continue his activism despite the constant threats and danger. Being at the Lincoln County courthouse that day, helping African-American voters, shows a level of bravery that I can’t even begin to comprehend. It's so upsetting that his dedication to justice and equality ended in such a brutal way, with so many witnesses remaining silent out of fear.
Reading about the sheriff's inaction is infuriating. How could someone in a position of authority just watch it unfold and do nothing? It's a prime example of the systemic issues that so many were fighting against. My heart truly goes out to Smith's family and friends who had to endure this injustice alongside their loss. Does anyone know if the documentary "Murder in Black and White" covers more about his personal life and what drove him to be so persistently involved in the civil rights movement? I think understanding more about him as a person might add some depth to the story we often overlook.
