I've been following discussions about the tragic events surrounding Mickey Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman, and I wanted to highlight the role of local law enforcement in this horrendous crime. It's chilling to think that those who were supposed to protect and serve the community were actually working with the Klan to harm these brave young men. They were standing up for something so important—voting rights for everyone—and to think that law enforcement was complicit is beyond disturbing. It's a stark reminder of how intertwined racial injustices were with institutions at the time. I can't imagine the pain their families must have felt, knowing the systems in place were part of the cruel acts. Their courage in the face of such hostility is truly inspiring and should never be forgotten.
