I've been thinking a lot about how the media covered Sandy's murder back in 2010. It’s a shame how, too often, the narrative doesn’t reflect the real person behind the story. Sandy was more than a statistic or an incident report. She was someone who lived, loved, and had every right to feel safe in her community. It seems like her truth was overshadowed by the way she was represented in the news. It just makes me so sad that her identity was challenged even after her death just because of how some media outlets chose to report on it. How do we expect to create a safer world when their stories aren’t told with the true respect and dignity they deserve? It feels like highlighting this issue back then wasn’t just about Sandy but all transgender individuals who face these prejudices. We really need to push harder for compassionate reporting. Anyone else remember how Genderqueer Chicago stepped up? That was inspiring but a reminder of how much work there still is. What do you think could help change these reporting standards?
