I’ve been thinking a lot about the community's role in Laquita Shanta Roy’s tragic death, and it just breaks my heart that she had to experience such violence in a place that should have been safe—her own home. It sounds like this wasn’t an isolated incident when it comes to the disturbances caused by Donte' Cornelius Porter. I wonder if anyone else in the community feels like there were just so many warning signs leading up to her murder.
I can't help but think that maybe if the neighborhood concerns had been taken more seriously, or if there were more resources to address Porter's behavior, Laquita would still be with us today. It's so troubling to hear that someone could have been causing so much fear and disruption without intervention before it escalated to this horrific point. I genuinely hope we can learn from this and figure out ways to better protect people like Laquita who should have been able to live her life in peace.
