Hey everyone, I’ve been closely following the discussions around the tragic death of 17-year-old Montreal Montgomery, and something that keeps weighing on me is the environment in which these kids are forced to grow up. It’s heartbreaking to think that for many young people in areas like the South and West Sides of Chicago, violence is almost an expected part of their daily lives. Montreal's death really highlights how crucial it is for the community to have access to safe spaces and opportunities that can help disengage them from cycles of violence. I’ve read about some local initiatives, but it seems like there’s still so much more that needs to be done in terms of support systems—not just from law enforcement, but also through education, after-school programs, and mentorship efforts. I can’t help but think about how essential it is for us to focus on early intervention and preventive measures. It’s too easy for these systemic issues to feel insurmountable, but we owe it to the youth of Chicago, to kids like Montreal, and all the families who've suffered, to keep pushing for change. I hope that his death can somehow be a catalyst for more substantial community involvement and policy action. If anyone here knows of organizations doing good work that we could get involved with or support, please share. We need to be as proactive as we can in creating paths away from violence for these young lives.
