I'm deeply moved reading about the events of March 27, 1909, and the tragic loss of City Marshal Edward Baum in Checotah, Oklahoma. One aspect that stands out to me is the sheer bravery displayed by both Marshal Baum and Deputy Herman Odom. I can't begin to imagine the courage it took to face such danger head-on, knowing the risks they were up against while serving the warrant on Chitto "Crazy Snake" Harjo. It's a sobering reminder of the challenges officers have always faced in the line of duty. It must have been incredibly difficult for the families and the community to process such a devastating loss, especially during a period when communication and support systems were not as robust as they are today. Their sacrifice and the void left in their absence must have left a lasting impact on everyone in Checotah. It's essential we remember the individual stories behind these historical events, honoring the people like Marshal Baum and Deputy Odom who put their lives at risk for the safety of others. My heart goes out to their families as they carry the legacy of these courageous men.
